Just like chasing the perfect line on the mountain, great coffee begins with timing. The rhythm of the seasons determines when farmers harvest their coffee cherries, and that timing shapes everything ...from flavor and aroma to the freshness of your morning brew. At Ski Bum Coffee Co®, we source our beans from some of the most vibrant coffee-growing regions around the world, each with its own unique harvest cycle and signature taste.
Here’s a look at when and where the magic happens ...from the volcanic highlands of Bali to the misty mountains of Colombia.
Bali, Indonesia - May to October
Bali’s coffee is grown on the island’s rich volcanic soil, mainly in the Kintamani Highlands. The harvest typically runs from May through October, just before the monsoon season rolls in. The result? Beans with deep, syrupy body and notes of dark chocolate, spice, and citrus ...perfect for adding warmth to your cup after a cold morning on the slopes.
Costa Rica - November to March
Costa Rica’s lush valleys and high-altitude farms make it a favorite among coffee lovers. Harvest happens between November and March, aligning with the country’s dry season. Costa Rican beans are prized for their clean, bright acidity and honeyed sweetness ...a lively complement to early winter mornings or mid-day pick-me-ups at the lodge.
Colombia - October to February (main) & April to June (mitaca)
Thanks to Colombia’s diverse microclimates, coffee is harvested twice a year. The main harvest runs from October through February, with a smaller “mitaca” harvest from April through June. This staggered rhythm ensures a steady supply of fresh beans with the country’s signature balance... medium body, caramel sweetness, and smooth, nutty undertones that keep every sip consistent and comforting.
Mexico - November to March
In the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca, coffee harvests peak from November to March, following the region’s rainy season. Mexican coffees tend to be smooth, mild, and aromatic, with a touch of nuttiness and cocoa. It’s a versatile roast that pairs beautifully with your après-ski pastries or breakfast burritos before hitting the lifts.
Guatemala - December to April
Grown among volcanic slopes and high altitudes, Guatemalan coffee shines from December to April. The combination of fertile soil and cooler climates produces beans with bold flavors ...think full-bodied richness and hints of chocolate and spice.
Peru - April to September
Peru’s Andean peaks are home to high-altitude coffee farms where the harvest runs from April through September. Peruvian coffees are known for their gentle sweetness, medium body, and subtle notes of floral and fruit. Balanced and approachable, they bring a touch of sunshine to even the snowiest day.
