Brewing the Perfect Cup: Understanding the Golden Ratio for Coffee
Share
At Ski Bum Coffee Co®, we know that the perfect cup of coffee starts with the right balance. Whether you're gearing up for a day on the slopes or simply enjoying a cozy morning, dialing in your brew ratio can make all the difference.
What is the Golden Ratio?
Coffee experts recommend a 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio for optimal flavor extraction. This means 60 grams of coffee per liter of water when using a drip coffee maker. But don’t worry—if you don’t have a scale, you can estimate that one tablespoon of ground coffee equals about six grams.
How to Apply the Golden Ratio
- Mild Brew: Use 1 tablespoon of coffee per 6 ounces of water
- Balanced Brew: Stick to 2 tablespoons per 12 ounces of water
- Stronger Brew: Go for 3 tablespoons per 12 ounces of water
Why It Matters
Using the right ratio ensures a smooth, flavorful cup—never too weak or too bitter. Adjust based on your taste preference, and always use specialty-grade coffee (like ours!) for the best results.
